Here are some photos of me, Pippi, Rosa and Avi Feldman at the movies. The community-owned movie theater in Northampton, the Academy of Music, had a fund raiser featuring movies about food. We saw Eat, Drink, Man, Woman, which I highly recommend, and ate egg rolls and dumplings (also recommended) and candied ginger (recommended only in small doses). And popcorn. The next night, we rented Tortilla Soup, which was a made-for-cable film that took the characters, almost all the plot and a good chunk of the dialogue from Eat, Drink, Man, Woman and changed the setting from Taiwan (with a Chinese family) (or maybe Hong Kong, ask Pippi) to Los Angeles, with a Mexican-American family. Since the plot involves a character who is a master chef, this also involved translating from Chinese food to Mexican food. I don't recommend Tortilla Soup except as a learning experience: you learn how to take a brilliant, subtle, funny, touching movie and make it unbrilliant, unsubtle, unfunny and totally out of touch. I loved seeing the contrasts. I'm not sure that Pippi, Rosa and Avi were quite as enthusiastic....

I can't stand to sit here and view photographic evidence of Avi Feldman being physically restrained. I feel so helpless.
