Chloe's Bat Mitzvah: Myth or Legend?

The night was dark and still, but the air in the room was redolent with the exotic aromas of hors d'oeuvres. The throng, assembled from many distant lands and cultures, took in the ancient rituals: the Hora, the candle ceremony, the chair thing, the crazy DJ. The Putnam National Club had seen many arcane gatherings. It had seen weddings. It had seen cocktail parties. It had seen Kiwanis Golf Outings. But this was different. This was something the Club had never seen before and would never see again. This was Chloe's Bat Mitzvah. And that made all the difference.

something

mom saw that i left a comment saying i have nothing to say. so she suggested i post pictures. of what? she didnt say. so here are some pictures:

this is what you get if you type in "happy man" in google images. i think hes french. and he does seem like a very happy man indeed, google is so dependable!
yet another happy man! he seems happy because he has food. i would be happy too. moving on.
i dont know these people either but if you're stuck on ideas for a halloween costume i would highly recommend this. or waldo. cause if you were waldo people could brag that they found you. speaking of smurfs...(well, i was before i brought up waldo)...

apparently UNICEF has decided smurfs should be attacked with nuclear weapons. you'd think i was kidding:

http://edition.cnn.com/2005/WORLD/africa/10/11/unicef.smurfs.ap/

its a sad day for the smurf village.

Welcome new subscribers

Greetings to everyone who's joined the Kesslerville editorial staff recently (that includes you Lucie, Donna and Romy!). We want to invite everyone to sign up and to put in their own contributions. I've sent out an email with my current list of email addresses, and asked everyone for edits and updates. When I have them, I'll send out a new round of invitations to join the blog. Also, if you've wanted to submit a post, but are shy or aren't sure you know how to do it, give it a try! I will be glad to answer any questions about how to do it. I will probably answer the questions wrong, but I will answer them. If you don't want to call me, call Hillel. Despite the fact that I was giving him helpful advice, he figured it out, and even posted pictures. So there. See you at Chloe's Bat Mitzvah?

Renee Kessler Weds!

Kesslerville investigative reporter B. D. Schiff has brought to our attention the recent wedding of Renee Kessler and David Reamer. Who would have expected that news in this blog! When you're done kvelling about Renee and David, you might also keep reading the story to see if anything else catches your eye. If there's news that you need to know, you'll find it here at Kesslerville.... http://www.jewishtimes.com/Milestones/weddings.stm

Avi Feldman's 15 Minutes of Fame

Avi Feldman (see photo), who has inspired a generation of idealists, is becoming even more famous. His unmistakeable mug recently appeared in the October 24 edition of Newsweek, not to mention the Newsweek online edition: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/9707667/site/newsweek/ . (The on-line edition even has a link to a clip from Ivory Towers, the college soap opera that brought Avi to a wider public; the clip unfortunately doesn't include Avi. ) Admittedly, it's not the same as being in the Greenfield Recorder or Western Massachusetts Health Care News, but it's a start.

backpfeifengesicht

Some of you may have missed the pithy review of the book THE MEANING OF TINGO in the January, 2005 issue of the Picayune Inquirer. I thought as much. To remedy this I am forwarding a few of the words and phrases that appear in the book. The book deals with a man who is obsessed with dictionaries and he highlights some of the more interesting words that he has found.
* In Bolivia the word "umjayanipxitutuwa" means: "I was totally drunk last night, and anyway it's all their fault!"
* In Intuit areodjarekout means "to exchange wives for a few days only".
*backpfeifengesicht=A face that cries out for a fist in it (German)
*fshes=a broom-like mustache (Albanian, in fact, has 27 different words for mustaches including "rruar" which is a mustache that has been shaved off)
*knisper, knasper, knusper=snap, crackle and pop (German)
*tingo=to borrow objects from a friend's house until there is nothing left (Pascuense-Easter Island
*zechpreller=a person who always disappears form a cafe before paying his bill (German)
*akkisuitok=to refrain forever from giving an answer (Inuit)
*tsuji-giri= to try out a new sword on a passerby (Japanese)
*nakhur=a female camel tht gives milk only if its nostrils are tickled with a reed of straw

Wedding photos

You may recall from an earlier post that I got some of my Josh and Beth's wedding photos back from the drug store with a CD of the photos so that I could post them here. Unfortunately, the people in the CD were all strangers, at a mysterious party for someone I've never seen before ( I put up a photo of three blond girls from the mystery party so it wouldn't be a total loss). The good (or bad) news is that I traded the blond girls and their party photos in on a CD of the wedding. Here are some of the photos. You may want the blond girls back, but it's too late. It's just us chickens...

Non-fiction poetry

At Josh's wedding, he told us that his friend Loncar wrote poems along the lines of: "I was driving downtown/And I spilled/Coffee in my lap..." Josh refused to accept this as poetry, on the ground that it was merely reporting an event that had actually taken place: "Loncar, that's not poetry -- that really happened to you.."

Thus was born the new genre of non-fiction poetry, or as some call it, journalistic verse (at least it could be verse). The official documentor of the new form is that man-about-literature Avi Feldman. But Feldman is busy with college, and I can't wait any longer. There will be more to come when the mighty Feldman steps up with his notebook, but in the meanwhile, here is a poem that happened to me only this morning.

"Lester's Request".

The polka show was on the radio
and Lester asked Billy
to play "The Beer Barrel Polka"
And he said
"In heaven
there is no beer --
and that's why
we drink it in Chicopee."

Have any poems happened to any of you lately?

L'Shana Tova to all, and to all a good night

'Twas the night before Rosh Hashonah and all through the house, not a creature was stirring not even the kids of Moose.

Or something like that. Anyway, we want to wish you all a healthy, happy New Year. It was wonderful to see so many of you at the Bar Mitzvah and/or the Wedding, we hope we can do it again soon.

Some Shelburne Falls pictures

I had to go to Shelburne Falls today to get some new glasses, and I decided to wander around taking photos for the blog. Here are the two Shelburne Falls tourist attractions, the famous Bridge of Flowers and the Glacial Potholes, along with a scene outside of our favorite restaurant. Just for good measure, I threw in the sign for KJ
Bowling Lanes. No extra points for figuring out which picture is which.
